Internet security issues:
Is there really a problem?

Yes!
If you have a computer connected to the internet you need to be aware of security issues 24/7 (all the time).

The Basics:

Prior to 2009, there were a total of 14 million malware packages.

In 2009, this increased to 29 million malware packages.

In 2010, there are over 20 million malware packages per month!

Your first line of defense is a Firewall.

You need a device, hardware is better - but software can work if you have dial up only - that blocks unwanted internet requests. However, this doesn't block MALWARE ~ only the hackers or crashers that are trying to break into your computer.

Malware comes with software you load; from email, websites, video or audio files, malware can be from trusted web sites or rouge sites.  If you connect to the internet, Malware will come.  No product is perfect, so even if you have installed anti-malware software, you have to be vigilant.

Never respond to random messages asking for passwords or requesting that you download a new software package.

But HOW DO I STOP IT?
Glad you askedSmile

There are numerous anti-virus software products available for purchase.  They usually range between $30 to $79 per year and often include phone support.

Trusted brands include:

  • Norton
  • McAfee
  • Panda Tools
  • Solphs
  • TrendMicro

There are free options that work pretty well, however there is no phone support for these products.

  • Avira
  • Atwit Avast
  • Avg 8.5 free
  • Microsoft security essentials

Other simple acts you can do to help protect your computer and your family are:

  • Install the FREE Windows updates, available once a week on average.
  • Back up your computer weekly or monthly to a separate drive or service
  • Consider using alternative browsers such as Firefox or Google Chrome
  • Use wellknown plugins for browsers ie: Adobe, Apple, Foxit, Microsoft, Sun

Still having problems?  Try a free Malware scanner:

If you are STILL infected, UNPLUG THE SYSTEM and bring it to Best Buy, Staples or Office Depot. They deal with infected systems all day long.

Are you connected to the internet via Wireless access?

Make sure you have encripted connections via:

  • WPA2 if possible
  • WPA
  • WPS
  • WEP for older devices

Make sure you and your family use house rules

If we know the computer is secure, is there anything we can do to make it even safer?
